A True Friend

“One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24, NIV).”

What is a friend? Merriam-Webster Learner’s Dictionary defines a friend as “a person who helps or supports someone or something.” A true friend as I’ve articulated earlier in one of my articles is a person that “is willing to enter into another’s experience.” In other words, a person that is there with you through difficult and “down seasons” in your life as well as mountaintop experiences in your life or a “ride or die” person as the Urban Dictionary so eloquently enunciates is “the people in your life who are there with you through the thick and the thin and ones that'll stick it through with you till the end.”

There are many people in society that profess to be friends and utilizes the word “friend” too loosely for example:

  1. “Hello friend!”
  2. “She is a friend of mine.”
  3. “I have many Facebook friends.”
  4. “Will you be my friend?”

But true friends are very rare and “far and between.” If we all are honest with ourselves, many of us have failed as friends or haven’t truly been befriended by others. The true mark of a friend requires sacrifice and giving of ourselves for the benefit of another and I wonder if many of us are truly willing to make such a huge investment of our time for anyone other any ourselves!

The reason why so many relationship don’t function at their optimal performance and many people feel short-changed in the relationship is because oftentimes one of the person(s) involved, if not both, enter into the relationship with a “me mentality” and not a “we-mentality” but the Bible is very clear in (I Corinthians 13:5, NKJV) that “Love doesn’t seek its own,” in other words, “it isn’t about me but it is about us.”

Also, (I Corinthians 13:5-8, NKJV) tells us that love:

“It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, and it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, and always perseveres. Love never fails.”

“Infatuation fails but love never fails!”

So, are you a true friend? What motivates you to be a friend? Is your focus others-focused of self-focused? God is love and requires that we all love one another not through words alone but through action and although loving each other is hard work, we must do it because God did it for us (John 3:16, NKJV).

Yes, it is risky being a friend, yes, people are flawed and have many issues but you have them too yet God bears with your weaknesses and imperfections, “so you ought to bear with the failings of the weak and not to please yourselves (Romans 15:1, NIV).”

In conclusion, my final question to you today is, what ways can you exemplify through your life, actions and relations with others that you are a true friend? Here are some examples listed below:

  1. Selfless love with partiality
  2. Love without boundaries
  3. Love through the eyes of God
  4. Extend mercy, grace and forgiveness as it has been given to you
  5. Seek opportunities to be loving and to exemplify love towards all of God’s people

I pray that this article has blessed you as it has been a blessing writing it and it is my prayer that it will penetrate your hearts and not only will you read it but will make it applicable in different areas of your life and how you relate to others on a daily basis.

“A friend loves at all times (Proverbs 17:17, NIV).”
