Spiritual Warfare - The Ambush

Kris believes that life is a battle, our enemy is Satan, his goal is to destroy us, and our victory is in Christ alone.  Her life is marked with battles. She battled anorexia, depression, and anxiety as a young woman. In her 30s she battled laryngeal cancer...twice. Each battle brought her closer to the heart of Christ, solidified her trust in Him, and deepened her desire to share the hope found only in Him.

She shares her day to day struggles and victories on her blog, aptly named "In The Battle".

This week, I have been thinking a lot about the battle we fight against Satan.  I mentioned in the last post that I am not sure that Christians take Satan's attack on us seriously. The Bible refers to him as a prowling lion, looking for someone to devour. I found out 3 interesting things about how lions hunt.

The first is that they’re incredibly good at hiding and phenomenally patient.

Lions are opportunistic hunters, and, after a careful stalk, will take the closest animal regardless of its age, sex or condition.

If you've ever watched one of those shows on lions, you've seen the lioness waiting patiently in the tall grass near a water hole, nothing moving but the occasional twitch of the tail. The scene changes and you see a herd of zebra heading toward the water hole. If you are like me, you talk to them thru the TV, "no no no! Don't go there! Danger! Danger! Danger!" Occasionally one of the animals will hesitate and cautiously glance around, but inevitably the lure of the water overshadows any indication that danger is near. They approach the water and the lions bolt from their hiding places, catching the animals completely off guard.

Satan is also good at hiding, and has the utmost patience. He will lurk in the shadows until the perfect time to strike. He can catch the strongest Christian off guard and wreak havoc on his / her life.

Of course, Satan doesn't lurk behind trees or under the bed. Scripture gives us a warning in Genesis.

Then the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it."

From the very beginning, Satan has been lying in wait. Patiently looking for the perfect opportunity to attack.

"It's only a movie"

"It's just a book"

"It's only flirting, we aren't doing anything"

"It's just business"

"It's my body"

"It's just one drink"

The list of things we say as we walk headlong into sin is endless, and Satan is waiting, wringing his hands in anticipation as we walk right into his trap. Even the strongest Christians can be ambushed. Very few, if any, choose to have an affair that destroys their family. I don't believe that anyone chooses to become an alcoholic or drug addict. Satan knows where our sin leads. He knows that we will end up in bondage. It's important to know where he hides.

Do you know where Satan is lurking?

One of our best lines of defense is to know where Satan is lurking, what he uses to lure us into his trap.

What seemingly "innocent" things is he possibly using to lure you into more obvious sin?

Father God,

Make us aware of Satan's schemes in our lives. Help us to see the seemingly significant things he uses to draw us into dangerous places. Reveal the areas of "little sins" in our lives that we like to overlook and show us how these can lead us to places we do not want to go.
