Oh boy, it finally happened. That long awaited promotion found its way to you at last and now you have direct reports. OK, great, now how do you start to build a sense of community amongst your team members? Well for starters, you may wish to look for those quick wins that will clearly communicate the types of values and behaviors you are looking to instill. One immediate way in which to do so is to celebrate those values and victories by creating a spirit of community.

Now don’t get me wrong, I realize community is not always easy to create when half your team travels over 30 minutes (on a good day) just to get to work. It’s also not that straightforward when your company moves at the speed of light on a slow day. I get it. That said creating community and motivating team members to consistently give their best does not have to be complicated or time consuming. For starters:

  • Schedule celebrations (planned and impromptu)
  • Install a public bragging board
  • Create a commemorative award honoring exemplary actions
  • Demonstrate caring by walking around (major! – yes, you must talk too)
  • Be a cheerleader-your way
  • Have fun, set the example by giving employees permission to be creative
