Whenever Possible, Give More Than Promised

I have an acquaintance that recently began a new job. As part of his initial assignments, he was tasked with obtaining a professional certification which would aid in his ability to perform his new tasks. Originally given a month to obtain his certification, through diligent study, he was able to take and pass the test in under two weeks. When I spoke with him last, he was considering “not” sharing this great news with his boss just yet. He thought that perhaps he should take the opportunity to spend a few days relaxing and enjoying the fruits of his hard fought victory.

Wow! What a lost opportunity to deliver more than expected and to show the new manager what an excellent hiring decision he had made. Now before passing judgment, ask yourself, “When was the last time I opted for the chance to just get by instead of excelling?” It’s so easy to feel like we’ve done our best when we meet our commitments on time or keep the promises we’ve made regarding our various obligations. But have we? If we have the capability to do more than promised, should we hold back in doing so?

I’ll leave the above thoughts for my readers to contemplate…What I will say, however, is that those with a spirit of excellence (which by the way, tends to lead to promotion) almost never miss an opportunity to deliver more than promised or expected. Sure there are all sorts of justifications for why an individual may be doing just fine simply delivering what is expected. Be that as it may, it’s those who continuously search for opportunities to beat expectations by seeking innovative ways to change, grow, and improve the tasks they are responsible for.
