Move It or Lose It by Robin Trimingham

If it seems like I have been MIA from the blogging world the last couple of weeks, it is because I have been moving house; which also means that I have been moving my home office.

Moving when you are running a fulltime business from home is tricky because you can’t just box everything up and sort things out at the other end when you find the time. You practically need a spreadsheet to keep track of all the appointments and phone calls that you must make regardless of whether you can find the blue shoes that go with the outfit you were planning to wear.

Somehow it escaped me that the very next morning after I had moved my furniture, I was expected to be in town by 8:15 am to collect muffins for a presentation that Bill Storie and I were hosting at the local Chamber of Commerce at 9:00 am. Between the howling gale that had settled over the island, the single lane traffic on the bridge due to construction, and the fact that I had spent the night sleeping on the floor because there wasn’t time to put the bedframe together, it’s a wonder that I arrived in any condition to inspire others, but as they say, the show must go on …

Thank goodness that I won’t have to go through all of this again any time soon, but I do admit that it was worth the pain as I love my new place.

I also picked up a few tips that may help some of you with your next move:

·         Start by throwing out, selling, or donating every last thing you can bear to part with, and then sell some more stuff. Remember, you must pay to move everything you keep and moving is expensive. Why waste money moving worn out stuff you are tired of (or never even use) when you can sell it and use the money to get new things for your new place?

·         You can use your smart phone to create a “portable wifi hotspot” and share it with your laptop so that you can have continuous internet access even on moving day

·         Get a long-distance plan for your cell phone and never be out of touch with family or clients again regardless of where you are or whether the phone service has been connected at your new place

·         Take all of your off-season clothes to the dry cleaners instead of moving them in boxes. You can pick them up a few at a time freshly pressed once you are settled.

·         Whether you are packing or unpacking – don’t try to deal with more than six boxes at a time. Let’s face it, Rome wasn’t built in a day and the living room does not have to be “company ready” in the first forty-eight hours

·         Make yourself a survival box to get you through the first 24 hours and DON’T let it out of your sight. (Mine contains coffee, coffee mug, coffee maker, almond milk, granola bars, dog food, dog leash, shower curtain, shower curtain rings, soap, toilet paper, cell phone, IPad and chargers). I don’t know about you, but I just don’t function without coffee!

·         Keep a sense of humor no matter what happens – your back is going to hurt, stuff is going to go missing (I still can’t find the pepper mill) and at least one thing is going to break.

·         Remember all the good things that attracted you to your new place and start making the most of them right away. You can save the picture hanging for a rainy day.
