Why On Earth Am I Here? by Bill Storie

A few days ago, I was driving to a meeting when I passed a local church. On the wall outside there was a tarpaulin banner advertising an upcoming event at the church which said, “Why on earth am I here?”

It seemed a simple question at first glance yet somehow it intrigued me for the rest of the day. The more I thought about it the more I was confused. I suppose the fact that it was outside a church as opposed to a school or office building or some other place, made me ponder the question in a slightly more inquisitive fashion.

Actually, my first line of confusion was the wording of the question itself.  For example, what’s the difference between:

“Why am I here on earth?”, compared to “why on earth am I here?”

The difference, on the surface, may seem miniscule but I remind you that the words were outside a church and thus the notion that those with faith would favor the latter and not the former confuses me. Surely the point of faith is to acknowledge that we are here on earth and the question must therefore revolve around the purpose as being to help others, perhaps less fortunate than ourselves, in our community through support, advice and fellowship.

In fact, I would even argue that the whole purpose of this wonderful Olderhood Phenomena is to help others around the world. Some actually tell us that the evolution of Olderhood has been, for many, a Divine Intervention in the world of social media, particularly for those of us who are in our latter years.

Time and time again, we are told by people all over the world that the ability to login and read quality information, see relevant reports and meet others in a trusted online community has been a life changing event. People who are house-bound through illness, or financial stress, or where families have moved away and they are left alone, all day, every day. Many people who worry that their pension will stretch to meet their basic needs and consequently face depression on a regular basis, find strength and succor within the walls of Olderhood.

I perhaps should go to the local event and address the audience as to the purpose of many of us who do understand the psychological stress millions of people face every day and express our support of ways and means to be of some assistance, if not in terms of financial support perhaps, but certainly in the appreciation of their plight.

While confirmation of people’s problems may not alleviate them, nonetheless we are constantly encouraged by Olderhood followers who understand that while we can’t help out in tangible terms, the fact that we are here and that we do understand and that we do our best to highlight their concerns and offer some thoughts, ideas and advice, is well received.

Therefore, I submit that the answer to the question is that the reason you are on earth is to improve yourself, your family, your neighbors and the community at large. Perhaps if we all tried a wee bit more of thinking of others rather than focus entirely on ourselves then maybe, just maybe, we would leave this earth on the way out, better than the way we found it on the way in.

So, ask yourself, “Why am I here on earth?”

You will be delighted with your answers when you truly think about it objectively.
